Dentsply Sirona: More Than a Century of Dental Innovation

Dentsply Sirona has been innovating dental technologies that have transformed the industry for more than 100 years.

Dr. Jeffrey D. Clark is committed to Scottsdale Cosmetic Dentistry Excellence being as modern and sophisticated a dental office as possible. That effort includes technologies from Dentsply Sirona, which is among the most innovative companies in the dental industry. Technologies such as the CEREC Primescan scanner and the Galileos 3D imaging system have allowed us to deliver better, safer, faster dental care for more than 20 years.

Dentsply Sirona has an impressive history that dates back to the late 1800s, and in the nearly 150 years since, it has not just moved dentistry forward through technological innovation but helped establish standards for research and development, manufacturing, digital treatment, and clinical education.

Dentsply Sirona was not always a singular company. Sirona Dental Systems was founded in Germany in 1877, and DENTSPLY was founded in 1899 in New York City. Both were companies that supplied equipment and materials to dentists and various medical organizations. Both companies would evolve beyond supply to innovation, and in 2016, the two companies merged to become Dentsply Sirona, which is the largest such company in the world. It has more than 16,000 employees, a physical presence in more than 40 countries, and a sales presence in more than 120 countries throughout the world.

A merger made sense because both companies were quite similar in how they invested in new technologies. These breakthroughs include the first dental drill, the first reciprocating file for root canal treatment, and the first chairside CAD/CAM (computer-aided manufacturing and design) system. Both organizations recognized that true innovation was accomplished not just through a single device but with the interaction between all hardware and software.

Innovation has always been a driving force for each company, and both have been integral to shaping modern dental medicine. Their products reach more than 600,000 dental professionals annually and are used to treat more than six million patients a day—or more than two billion each year! The more than 100 years of experience has resulted in an unparalleled level of quality and clinical safety. The history of Dentsply Sirona may be best explored by considering some of its most impactful innovations.

Primescan: A New Standard in Dental Scanning

Dr. Clark uses the Primescan intraoral scanner in order to provide the most sophisticated dental care available to people throughout Scottsdale and the neighboring communities. The scanner is usable chairside and makes photorealistic, highly accurate 3D images of the mouth: teeth, bone structures, gums, blood vessels, and so forth. Not only is the Primescan scanner accurate, but it is incredibly fast, being able to process more than one million points a second. The Primescan software can then use that data to create the most advanced crowns, implants, removable prostheses, and so on ever made. Dr. Clark just has to perform a few sweeps with the wand. Minutes later, he has access to 3D models that can be used to plan restorations and even simulate before-and-after photos for the patient.

Galileos 3D Imaging: A Better Way to Diagnose Patients

Dr. Clark is proud to have the Galileos CBCT digital scanning technology available at Scottsdale Cosmetic Dentistry Excellence. CBCT stands for cone-beam computed tomography. This tech uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam that is rotated around the head of the patient. That data is collected and then analyzed by the Galileos software to create a 3D image of not just the teeth but the nose, mouth, jaw, ears, throat, and neck. This entire process happens in less than 15 seconds, and it provides Dr. Clark a diagnostic tool, unlike anything dentists have had at their disposal before. If you have a dental issue, Dr. Clark can look at it from every perspective in order to diagnose and treat it as accurately as possible. This hardware and software are used for general care but also for treating gum disease, making and installing dental implants, and advanced cosmetic dentistry. The tech is also integral to CEREC same-day crowns.

CEREC Milling: Fast, Precise, Natural Restorations

It used to be that dentists needed an off-site lab to manufacture crowns and other oral restorations. In fact, many dentists still rely on off-site labs, but that means long wait times for patients. At Scottsdale Cosmetic Dentistry Excellence, Dr. Clark has a CEREC milling machine on-site. That allows him to prepare and manufacture your crowns and other restorations during your visit. The first step is to use the Primescan scanner mentioned earlier to create a 3D image of the tooth. Dr. Clark can then adjust that image—this is where the art comes in—to form a perfect restoration. Those measurements are then transmitted to the milling unit, which then creates that crown from a solid block of porcelain. Dr. Clark has a wide variety of porcelain colors available to him so that he can select the ideal match for your mouth. The entire process takes just minutes, and you are assured a perfect fit and a natural look. Dr. Clark will then polish the restoration and place it in your mouth. This technology is what lets you visit us and get a crown or multiple crowns in just a single visit!
